China Telecom IPTV

China Telecom Corporation Limited is a full services integrated operator and the world’s largest wireline telecommunications and broadband services provider. It offers telecommunication and information services including fixed line voice, mobile telephony, data, video and multimedia. On 1 October 2008, China Telecom completed the acquisition of China Unicom’s CDMA business and launched its own CDMA mobile services.

China Telecom’s IPTV service was launched in 2006 in Shanghai in partnership with Shanghai Media Group (SMG). SMG, formed by six state owned media organisations based in Shanghai, is the first IPTV licence holder in China. Under the Chinese law, IPTV licences cannot be issued directly to broadband network providers. Instead, all IPTV services are jointly managed by IPTV broadcasting corporations and telecoms operators.

China Telecom’s IPTV service is available in 17 cities in the following regions: Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian, Hainan, Shaanxi, Jiangsu and Guangdong.

In May 2010, China Telecom announced plans to build a FTTH network covering 18 million homes across the country. In 2011, the company launched High Definition IPTV channels.
