KDDI (AU Hikari One Video Channel TV Service)

KDDI is an alternative carrier formed in October 2000 by the merger of Japan’s state-owned international telecommunication carrier KDD, the alternative carrier DDI, and the mobile phone operator IDO. The telco provides mobile services via its ‘AU’ brand and Internet services to residential customers ('Hikari One' FTTX, 'ADSL One' ADSL, and 'au one net' ISP), as well as acting as the major international carrier and an alternative domestic carrier. KDDI is also involved in content providing service such as LISMO. 'Hikari One TV' is provided as an option to the 'Hikari One' FTTX service.

KDDI’s broadband TV service started as 'Hikari Plus TV' on 12 December 2003. It consists of pay per view VoD service and multi-channel broadcasts (basic channels and optional channels requiring additional subscription fees). 'Hikari Plus TV' was renamed as 'Movie Splash (Hikari One TV)' in June 2006. It has significantly increased its channel selection from 30 to 50 in April 2007. Movie Splash service was also provided via selected cable TV companies.

In Q2 2010, 'Hikari One TV' service was renamed 'AU Hikari One Video Channel TV Service'.

In January 2010, Liberty Global reached an agreement to sell its subsidiaries that hold 37.8 per cent ownership interest in Jupiter Telecommunications (J:COM) to KDDI Corporation. In March 2011, KDDI acquired a 31 per cent stake in J:Com from Liberty Global.
