Telecom Italia profile and history

Operator profile

Telecom Italia is the incumbent telecommunication operator in Italy. It is one of the largest players in the fixed line and mobile markets in the country. The company also operates through its Internet business unit Telecom Italia Media that was established in August 2003. Telecom Italia offers DSL services through two channels, retail and wholesale.

On 28 February Telecom Italia finalized its acquisition of Time Warner’s AOL Germany internet access business for €665m in cash.

As of Q307, the operator is facing ownership change after the consortium led by Telefonica in April 2007 announced plans to buy a 23.6 percent stake in TI. This will make Telefonica the largest single shareholder in the company with an indirect stake of 10 percent.

In December 2009, Telecom Italia revealed in its new three-year strategy that it is aiming to reach 1.5 million IPTV subscribers by the end of 2011. The telco expects to reach 300,000 subscribers for its IPTV service ‘Alice TV’ by the end of 2009, and is trialling FTTH services, including IPTV, for commercial launch in 2009.

17 October  2008: Telecom Italia Media reached an undertaking with Airplus TV on the transfer of the PPV digital terrestrial activities.

Broadband investment

In May 2007, Telecom Italia signed an agreement with Metroweb to expand its fibre-optic network in and around Milan. The agreement will give Telecom Italia access to 70,000 buildings, partly through Metroweb’s network infrastructure.

The contract, which includes an investment of approximately EUR 50 million and the right to use the infrastructure for 15 years, is part of Telecom Italia’s plan to develop its next-generation broadband network (NGN2), which, starting from the city of Milan, is scheduled to be rolled out across Italy.

In April 2008, The Liguria Region and Telecom Italia today signed a Protocol of Understanding to extend the broadband network to a further 33 municipalities in the region, to reach a total of 208 municipalities by the end of 2009 and bring coverage to 96% of fixed telephone lines.

In October 2007, it was announced that Telecom Italia Group had deployed ECI Telecom’s broadband access solution to expand its outside plant broadband network. The solution will enable Telecom Italia to deploy broadband at any location, including new urban areas, saturated regions and rural areas, providing the broadband bandwidth necessary to support next-generation triple play services such as IPTV.

17July 2009: The first mobile broadband connections at 28 Mbps download and 5.8 Mbps upload are now active in the city of Milan. In October, Rome will enjoy the same upgrade based on Ericsson technology in a ‘world first’ implementation.

Past developments
