Operator Source Broadband Tariff Benchmarks: July 2004Broadband prices falling sharplyPoint Topic's latest Broadband Tariff Benchmarks analysis shows broadband prices are falling sharply for both DSL and cable modem services. On average, cable operators cut their monthly rentals for cable modems by 16% in the first half of 2004. DSL operators cut rentals by an average of 13% in the same period. As a result, the cable modem operators surveyed have almost caught up with the average monthly rentals offered by DSL providers, and reduced the 2003 gap that was evident in Point Topic's Q4 2003 analysis. As the chart below shows, the overall average monthly rental, in US dollars at purchasing power parity (PPP) exchange rates, fell by $7.2 from $39.2 to $32.0 for cable operators but only by $2.5 to $29.5 for DSL. Prices in the majority of DSL countries surveyed remained stable, although some countries experienced falls. In contrast, the cable modem market was much more dynamic with price falls across the board in Americas, Asia Pac and EMEA. The chart below shows price falls were concentrated in Q1 2004 for both cable and DSL. These price falls mark an important shift in the marketing strategies of cable modem operators as a whole. Point Topic's World Broadband Statistics shows that DSL not only provides the most popular mass market broadband access, with a 66% share of total lines, but is also pulling further ahead of cable modems. The bigger cuts in cable modem prices show cable operators trying to recover ground from DSL.
