Batelco (Bahrain Telecommunications Company) was established in 1981 as a Bahraini Shareholding Company. It offers mobile, national and international telephony, Internet and satellite services in Bahrain and other Gulf countries.

In 2006, the operator acquired Jordanian Umniah Mobile Communications, and later in Q107 it purchased a stake in Yemen's leading mobile operator SabaFon.

In 2011, Batelco continued the roll-out and trials of its Next Generation Network which provides countrywide broadband coverage. In addition, the company has been enhancing its mobile voice and Internet service. In Q411, Batelco carried out successful LTE trials.
