20 May 2010BayanTel

BayanTel is a telecommunication provider in the Philippines, 85.4 per cent owned by the Lopez Group and Benpres, a publicly-listed holding company. BTHC’s other main shareholder is the AIF. The operator has a majority stake in NTDN (National Digital Transmission Network), giving BayanTel access to NTDN's nationwide fibre-optic backbone covering 2,762 km and part-owned by six other major telecommunications carriers.

In Q309, the company bid for the fifth 3G licence in the country and was rejected. However, BayanTel has appealed the National Telecommunications Commission's (NTC) decision and won the case in Q210. It is likely that NTC, which has been planning to issue a 3G license to a new entrant or incumbent, will award it to BayanTel.
