Since the break-up of the former incumbent Telebras in 1998, the Brazilian broadband market has been reorganised regionally. In 1998, cable modem high-speed Internet services were launched in the Brazilian market following their approval one year earlier in 1997. The Brazilian telecommunication industry was fully liberalised on 1 January 2002. After deregulation, local loop unbundling (LLU) became possible.
