First launched in 1996, Cabovisao is the second largest operator in Portugal providing cable television services, high-speed Internet access, telephony and high-speed data transmission services in nine regions of the country. Its fibre-optic ring provides direct access to subscribers throughout Portugal, and the company holds licences to offer services in approximately 90 per cent of Portuguese households.

In August 2006, Cogeco Wire completed the acquisition of Cabovisao for USD 621 million. In Q309, the operator launched DOCSIS 3.0 based broadband with up to 120 Mbps download speeds.

In February 2012, Cogeco Cable sold Cabovisao for USD 60 million to Altice, a European group of investors. Altice already has holdings in several European service providers, including Numericable, Est Videocom, Coditel and Completel.
