Serving both the consumer and business clients, CenturyLink is positioned as the fourth largest local exchange telephone company in the US based on access lines. On 22 April 2010, CenturyLink and Qwest agreed to merge into one entity. As per agreement between the two companies, CenturyLink acquired Qwest in a stock-for-stock transaction. On 22 September 2010, the merger was granted approval. Following this, the merger was completed on 1 April 2011 creating the third largest telecoms company in the US. The merger will bring investment totalling around USD 623 million over a period of 3 - 5 years. The combined company will have extensive broadband coverage with its 173,000 mile fibre network.
