The company is one of the largest state-owned businesses in the country, providing telephony and broadband services over its railway communication infrastructure. When China Tietong was first formed, the company's telephone switching network was only capable of supporting 2.28 million lines. As the demand for digital and IP services continued to grow, China Tietong implemented a network upgrade in 2001 and by the end of 2003, had increased its network capacity by over ten times. Currently with its services covering nearly 300 LANs nationwide, China Tietong has 150,000 km of communication lines including 100,000 km of fibre cables. On 15 December 2009, China Tietong became a wholly owned subsidiary of China Mobile Communication Corporation. Currently Tietong has headquarters in all 31 provinces and states with branches all over the country.
