China Unicom was the subsidiary of the China United Telecommunication Corporation incorporated in Hong Kong in February 2000. China Unicom provides cellular, fixed telephony and data services including broadband and video-telephony services.

Since 1994, China Unicom has grown quickly, becoming the second largest CDMA operator and the third largest GSM operator in the world. In Q407, the operator launched 3G services in Macau.

In 2008, China Unicom sold its CDMA business to China Telecom. In January 2009, China Unicom merged with China Netcom. The name of the merged company was changed to China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited. In 2009, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited launched 3G mobile broadband services in various regions and fibre-optic broadband services in Shanghai.
