Chunghwa Telecom is the incumbent telecommunications operator in Taiwan. As of February 2003, the Taiwanese Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) owned 95.3 per cent of the company. Chunghwa Telecom launched its first DSL service on 31 August 1999.

In March 2009, Chunghwa Telecom announced the acquisition of a 30 per cent stake in So-net Entertainment Taiwan.
