CTBC Telecom was founded in 1954 and was the only private telecommunications company in Brazil for 20 years. Its areas of operation include Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás. The company launched 3G services in April 2008.

In February 2009, the operator, which is part of Algar Group, changed its name to Algar Telecom in the regions where the company provides services to business and corporate clients. These regions include Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Curitiba and metropolitan regions. The residential segment is served under the CTBC brand in Araguari, parts of Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul.
