Etisalat is one of the leading telecommunication service providers in the UAE, established on 30 August 1976. The company provides DSL services through its ISP, Emirates Internet and Multimedia (EIM), under the brand names Al Shamil and Business One.

In 1982, Etisalat was the first telecoms operator in the region to introduce a mobile phone service. It was also one of the early adopters of GSM technology in 1994. Since then it has established itself as a regional pioneer by introducing both 3G and MMS in 2003.

On 20 October 2009, Etisalat completed the first stage of its nationwide fibre-optic network deployment and launched a 30 Mbps residential broadband service. In Q110, Etisalat started upgrading its mobile broadband base stations to HSPA+ 3.5G and LTE 4G technology. Etisalat announced commercial launch of its LTE services capable of delivering internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps in December 2011.
