Operator Source 5 Jul 2011French Guiana Broadband OverviewFrench Guiana lies at the forefront of the global telecommunications satellite-launching business. More than half of the non-Communist world’s satellites are now launched from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guiana. However, the country’s telecom penetration is still very low, mainly due to a small market (population 235,690) spread over vast region. Satellite Internet is the most prominent broadband technology in French Guiana. The growth of satellite Internet access can be attributed to a small population dispersed over a large area. As a result, there are certain isolated parts of the country that can be made accessible only via satellite. The sparse and scattered population also limits operator investment in infrastructure. Despite this, one such operation to increase accessibility was undertaken at the end of 2001 in the framework of a partnership between the community of municipalities of western French Guiana and the CNES/CSG French Guiana Mission, in the town of Grand Sati where the satellite station was installed. The mobile market is the more active sector in the country with mobile penetration being almost double that of its fixed line counterpart. As with satellite Internet access, the major factor contributing to mobile sector growth is the existence of a number of isolated regions in the country not covered by fixed lines. These are now served by cellular providers. The premium data tables have been removed from this profile As a non-subscriber, you can only see the overview for this profile.
