Inmarsat was formed in 1979 and is a leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services. The company offers data and voice services including telephony, video, email and high-speed Intranet and Internet access through its satellite and ground infrastructure to its business, marine and aeronautical users.

In May 2006, Inmarsat announced the launch of its ‘BGAN service’ across North and South America. This allowed the operator to expand its mobile broadband services across the world. BGAN has become Inmarsat's fastest growing service during the first year of operation on both Inmarsat-4 satellites and deployed in more than 175 countries. In January 2009, Inmarsat acquired its largest distributor Stratos Global.

In August 2010, Inmarsat announced plans to invest USD 1.4 billion in next generation satellites by 2014.
