Mauritel SA is the incumbent operator in the Mauritanian telecommunications market. It is 51.527 per cent owned by CMC Morocco Telecom. It provides fixed telephony, mobile telephony and Internet services to both private and business customers. Mauritel provides Internet connection over PSTN, leased lines and ADSL. Subscribers to the company's ADSL services are offered broadband Internet speeds of up to 4 Mbps.

In Q410, Mauritel held a 55 per cent share in the Mauritanian fixed-line market and a 54 per cent share in the mobile market.

In 2010, Mauritel joined the consortium for the construction of ACE fibre-optic submarine cable which will strengthen the connectivity to West African coast countries, Europe, America and Asia. In addition, in Q211, Mauritel launched a fibre-optic cable linking Nouakchott and Kobonni.
