MTNL was established in 1986 by the Indian government, which holds a 56.25 per cent stake in the company. MTNL started operations in Delhi and Mumbai, and offers a complete range of telecommunication services including dial-up, broadband, home and mobile telephony, ISDN and leased line services.

On 31 January 2005, MTNL launched its broadband services under the brand name Tri Band. The operator's copper infrastructure is capable of supporting high bandwidth services such as VPN, multi-casting, video conferencing, VoD and broadcast applications.

In February 2009, MTNL launched 3G services under the brand name “Jadoo”. It is the first company in India to launch 3G services.
