NorthwesTel is a Canadian telecommunications company whose operations include local telephone services, long distance communications by microwave radio, fibre-optic cable and satellite communications. On 13 July 2007, NorthwesTel announced its intention to buy Whitehorse-based Northern Television Systems Ltd. (WHTV) from The Hougen Group of Companies. NorthwesTel will upgrade WHTV's network and increase WHTV's capacity, targeting a total of up to 50 high definition television (HDTV) channels by the end of the year in Whitehorse. NorthwesTel was established over 50 years ago and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bell Canada. Its subsidiary, NorthwesTel Cable Inc., provides cable television and Internet services to several communities in the Northwest Territories.
