Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) is the incumbent telecommunications operator in Japan. The company is the world's leading telecom company in terms of revenues and subscriber base. NTT has been forced to reduce tariffs because of the deregulation of the Japanese telecommunications market.
NTT offers its high-speed Internet service on its FTTH network under the brand name 'B FLET'S'. In November 2005, NTT expanded its FTTH network via a new wiring system with an aim to reach a target FTTH subscriber base of 30 million by 2010. The operator also tested an IPv6 based remote monitoring system to offer security features to its subscribers.
On 4 Jan 2007, NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced the acquisition of 760,500 shares in Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV). This acquisition will enable DoCoMo to provide a variety of new services to its TV customers.

Access Network
B FLET'S is a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) Internet access service. B FLET'S subscribers use optical fiber access lines to connect to the ISP of their choice, using the regional IP network of NTT East/NTT West. The service is offered on a best-effort basis.
'New Optical Generation' plan
On 10 Nov 2004, NTT announced its 'Medium-Term Management Strategy'. The strategy is aimed at advancing the company's long-term ‘Vision for a New Optical Generation’, disclosed in November 2002. Under this strategy, the company plans to transfer a majority of its customers to IP/optical network by the end of 2010. The homogeneous IP/optical network will reduce the maintenance cost substantially, compared to the existing heterogeneous network. This development will enable NTT to move towards a 'Flat-Rate Pricing Structure' which will not be based on distances and will meet customer requirements for quality, reliability, security levels, along with seamlessly providing varied data rates depending on service content.
Fibre optic trials
From December 2000, NTT East and West started conducting its Fibre optic trials in parts of Tokyo (NTT East) and Osaka city (NTT West), following which the service was launched in July 2001 for the residential users of NTT West. It was launched in NTT East area on 1 Aug 2001. The service is offered under the brand name ‘B FLET’S’. It started offering this service to the business users from 1 Nov 2001.
FTTH trials
In May 2000, NTT jointly conducted FTTH trials in Kanazawa for a period of one year. The trial encompassed approximately 100 end-users (41 lines) with a maximum capacity of 10 Mbps (Wide LAN Service).
