Pipex

3 October 2008
Pipex originated as a communications services company which was established in 1991. It offered internet solutions such as leased lines, dial-up access and broadband DSL services to business and residential customers in the UK.

In September 2007 the company completed the sale of its main broadband and voice division to Tiscali for a total consideration of 210 million GBP. The disposal of its consumer Internet and voice business included Switch2 Telecoms, Pipex Homecall, Toucan Residential, Pipex Internet and Toucan Residential Ireland. Its broadband services, which are the subject of this profile, continue to be offered under the Pipex brand, positioned as from "Pipex Internet Limited, a Tiscali UK company".

Initially, following the Tiscali takeover, Pipex was refocused on the consumer market but in February 2008 it launched a set of business broadband services. By April 2008 customers seeking residential services were being routed through to the Tiscali site and Pipex was reported as ceasing to take on new residential customers.

The corporate customer business remained with Pipex Communications, which has restructured its organization into three divisions - Web Hosting, Business Services and Pipex Wireless (WiMAX). Pipex Communications is not covered in this profile. More information can be found through www.pipexgroup.com.

At the end of 2006, Pipex Group had 59 unbundled exchanges. It planned to unbundle 41 additional exchanges by April 2007 and 75 more by the end of 2007. The company also planned to integrate Homecall, Toucan and the customers of Bulldog into one single unified business, eliminating any functional duplication in the company or operational structure.
