Operator Source 28 Mar 2012Portugal TelecomPortugal Telecom (PT) is the incumbent carrier in Portugal. The company launched DSL services in November 2000 and started deploying wholesale ADSL in early 2001. During the same period, PT announced that 70 per cent of lines in Lisbon and 60 per cent of lines in Oporto were DSL enabled. PT started offering ADSL services to other operators on a wholesale basis after the Portuguese local loop was unbundled in July 2001. PT’s retail ADSL service is marketed through its ISP PTM.com. In Q209, the operator launched fibre based services with up to 100 Mbps speeds in selected areas, followed by 200 Mbps speeds in 2010 and 400 Mbps in Q112. In July 2010, PT sold its 50 per cent stake in the Brazilian operator Vivo to Telefonica. In March 2011, it completed the purchase of a 25 per cent stake in Oi.
