Operator Source 4 Apr 2012PTCLPTCL is the incumbent operator in Pakistan, owning 90 per cent of the copper telephone line network. It is the only bandwidth provider and the largest telecommunication service operatorin the country. It offers fixed line, mobile and Internet services as well as VoIP, video-conferencing and carrier services for businesses and wholesalers. PTCL operates mobile telephony network via its subsidiary, Ufone, which is the second largest mobile operator in the country. On 12 April 2006, the government of Pakistan, which owned 88 per cent of PTCL, sold off a 26 per cent stake to Etisalat International Pakistan LLC, a subsidiary of Etisalat, for USD 2.59 billion. It took almost a decade from the government's initial announcement to divest its shares in the company. On 10 September 2007, Etisalat announced plans to acquire an additional stake in PTCL increasing its existing stake to 51 per cent. PTCL initially launched its broadband services in 2002. On 17 May 2007, a year after privatisation, it relaunched broadband services delivered directly by the company.
