Sonaecom entered the Portuguese telecommunications market in 1994. Sonaecom is the Sonae Group sub-holding for telecoms and broadband (through Optimus), Media (through Público) and Software and Systems Integration (through Bizdirect, Mainroad, WeDo and Saphety). The company's major shareholders include Sonae SGPS (53.17 per cent), Sonaecom SGPS (2.24 per cent - own shares) and Atlas Services Belgium (20 per cent).

Sonaecom provides integrated mobile, fixed and Internet services. Its NGN technology allows the company to offer Internet speeds up to 360 Mbps.

In Q112, Optimus launched 4G services.
