11 May 2012Sonatel

Sonatel is the incumbent operator in Senegal. The former state-owned company was established in 1985 by the merger of the Office of Stations and Telecommunications and Telesenegal. In 1997, France Telecom bought a 42.33 per cent stake in Sonatel. Almost ten years later in November 2006, the operator formed a partnership with the Orange Group. As a part of the deal, Sonatel adopted the Orange brand and introduced several new broadband and telephony services.

In March 2007, Sonatel acquired mobile licences in Guinea Bissau and Guinea in a move to extend its presence in the African continent. The operator is likely to face competition in the fixed line and Internet services market after the Sudanese company Sudatel won a new comprehensive telecommunications licence to provide services in Senegal in September 2007.
