Sony is a leading consumer electronics company with headquarters in Japan. Its subsidiary, So-net Entertainment Corporation, was formerly known as Sony Communication Network Corp. So-net operates in two business segments. The Connection segment provides Internet connection services via fibre-optics, telephone lines and wireless connections. The portal segment sells content and products online via its portal site So-net.

In September 2007, So-net Entertainment announced a collaboration with a number of investment banks and companies to apply for a licence for next generation high-speed wireless communications services. In December 2009, So-net's Board confirmed plans to acquire USEN's ISP business.
