11 May 2012Sudatel

Sudatel is the incumbent telecoms operator in Sudan set up as a public company in 1994. It offers dial-up access, leased lines and DSL broadband services to its residential and business customers. In 2006, Sudatel won a third operator licence which enabled it to extend its voice and data services to Mauritania.

In November 2007, Sudatel announced the purchase of a 70 per cent stake in Intercellular, one of Nigeria's leading privately owned telecoms operators. In Q109, Sudatel invested USD 250 million in the construction and operation of the East Africa Submarine (EASSY) cable which will connect South Africa’s Telkom network with Sudatel’s network.

At the end of 2010, Sudatel Group held a 26 per cent share of the telecommunications market in Sudan. Its 10,000 km fibre backbone network is the largest in Africa.
