Operator Source 5 Jul 2011Suriname Broadband OverviewIn August 2006, the Suriname government liberalised the market in the hope that an increase in the number of competing providers would lead to lower prices and improved services for end users. The regulator was officially established in April 2007 and telecoms services improved throughout 2008. The effects of the economic recession in 2009 remained relatively limited and Suriname has not significantly suffered from the crisis. In early 2009, the future of Suriname’s telecommunications market was secured by an agreement over the construction of a Suriname-Guyana submarine cable system network. Telesur and Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Co (GT&T) have joined forces to install a 1,240 km repeater submarine system, connecting Trinidad to Guyana and Suriname. In January 2010, the construction of the new submarine cable network marked a historical milestone in Suriname when the first sea cable was landed in Totness, Coronie. The government of Suriname expects that the new cable will positively impact the growth and development of the telecommunications sector in Guyana and Suriname.
