Talk Talk
17 June 2008
TalkTalk is the main telecoms service brand of the Carphone Warehouse group, offering internet and telephony services to residential customers in the UK. Carphone Warehouse made a huge impact on the UK broadband market in 2006 by first launching a very competitive bundle of phone and broadband services and then acquiring AOL's UK broadband customer base.
After a difficult period supporting the rapid increase in customer numbers, TalkTalk's growth rate has now levelled off and its customer satisfaction has improved considerably. In Spring 2008 the company also won credit with customers for taking a pro-user stance on such issues as music downloading.
TalkTalk's 'free' broadband is only available in areas where it has installed its own equipment in telephone exchanges to offer a local-loop unbundling (LLU) service. As of 15 April 2008, it had 1,619 exchanges unbundled and planned to increase it by another 400 to cover a total of 90% of the UK population.
The group launched TalkTalk operations in February 2003 in the UK as a competitive provider of alternate telephone service. It had only a small broadband operation until the Spring of 2006 when it launched a broadband and telephony bundle at the same price as its premium telephony service - enabling it to say that the broadband part of the service was free.
This resulted in nearly half a million advance orders within weeks and TalkTalk struggled to catch up with demand.
Further, on 11 Oct 2006, Carphone Warehouse announced its plans to acquire Time Warner’s AOL internet access business in the UK in a deal worth GBP 370 million. The combination placed Carphone Warehouse as clear number three in the UK broadband market, behind only BT and Virgin Media. AOL Broadband continues to be run as a separate brand and its services are covered in a different profile.
