Telecom Italia
15 August 2008
Telecom Italia (TI) is the incumbent telecommunications operator in Italy. It is one of the largest players in the Italian fixed line and mobile markets. The company also operates through its Internet business unit Telecom Italia Media (TIM) established in August 2003. Telecom Italia also offers retail and wholesale DSL services.
In February 2007, TI acquired AOL Germany and in doing so became the second largest German ISP. Currently, the operator is facing an ownership change after a consortium led by Telefonica in April 2007 announced plans to buy a 23.6 per cent stake in TI. This will make Telefonica the largest single shareholder in the company with a 10 per cent indirect stake.
On 1 October 2007, TI launched its quadruple play offering 'Unica', based on broadband and IP technology. Unica includes fixed and mobile telephony, Internet and Alice Home TV.
