Operator Source 30 Mar 2012Telecom New ZealandTelecom New Zealand (Telecom NZ) is the principal supplier of telecommunications services in New Zealand. It was established in 1987 as a limited liability company. The New Zealand Government holds a single preference share in the company that incorporates special rights and a deed defining minimum service obligations upon Telecom NZ. Telecom NZ provides a range of Internet, data, voice, mobile and fixed-line services for customers in Australia and New Zealand. It offers its high-speed Internet services under the brand name ‘Xtra’. In 2007 Telecom NZ acquired 100 per cent of the shares in Australian listed entity, PowerTel Limited, in a bid to consolidate the Australian telecommunications industry. In 2008 Telecom NZ underwent operational separation into five business units: Telecom Retail, Gen-i, Chorus, Telecom Wholesale and AAPT-PowerTel. In May 2011, the company agreed to the structural separation of Chorus by the end of 2011. With the completion of the de-merger in December 2011, Telecom NZ is now spilt into two entirely separate companies, radically changing the entire telecommunications industry structure in New Zealand.
