Telefonica de Espana is the incumbent telecoms operator in Spain. It launched its ADSL service in September 1999. The operator's network is capable of offering broadband speeds of up to 10 Mbps to 50 per cent of the country's households. In H2 2009, Telefonica started testing triple play packages with 10 Mbps and 30 Mbps speeds based on VDSL and FTTx technologies. As of Q112, its offerings include bundles with up to 50Mbps and 100Mbps speeds.

In November 2009, Telefonica announced that under the new brand strategy effective from 2010, Telefonica’s only commercial brands will be Movistar for Spain and Latin America and O2 for Europe. The Telefonica name will remain the institutional brand.
