29 Mar 2012Telemar (Oi)

Telemar Norte Leste (Telemar) is the largest provider of fixed-line telecommunication services in South America. The company was formed in 1998 when the Brazilian Ministry of Communications divided the incumbent telecoms operator, Telebras, into 12 regional companies. Telemar was one of these companies.

Telemar offers telephony, Internet and video-conferencing services in the Northern and Eastern regions of Brazil under the Oi brand name. In May 2008, Telemar initiated the acquisition of Brasil Telecom, which was completed in January 2009 with Oi having absorbed Brasil Telecom's assets and customer base. In July 2010, it was announced that Portugal Telecom will buy a 22 per cent stake in Oi. The transaction was completed in 2011.
