Operator Source 1 Feb 2010Telstra
Telstra Corporation Limited is a partly privatised Australian government telecommunications operator with offices in 30 countries. It offers DSL services through retail and wholesale channels. Its retail services are offered through BigPond, Telstra's Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Telstra launched its ADSL service in Australia in 2000, and as of March 2009 approximately 80 per cent of the Australian population has access to Telstra's ADSL2+ service with speeds up to 20 Mbps. Telstra's cable broadband offers residential customers speeds of up to 30 Mbps in selected areas of Sydney and Melbourne and up to 17 Mbps in other areas. In March 2007, Telstra unveiled its international connectivity strategy with the announcement of a new wholly-owned submarine cable between Australia and the USA. This allows increased data, voice and video transmission capability to the USA while significantly reducing Australia's reliance on foreign-owned companies in order to compete globally.
