It was established in 1964 with the original aim of providing broadcasting services, but the company later expanded into other areas including retail, Internet and broadband services. Until recently, USEN offered its broadband services via a subsidary U Communication (UCOM). In December 2009 it was acquired by So-net. On 1 September 2010, USEN's ISP GyaO was re-branded as Spaaqs. "GyaO Hikari with Flets" and "GyaO BB Basic" services were transferred to So-Net. Broad-Gate02 was still branded under USEN. On 1 September 2011, all fibre based services were unified under the "UCOM Hikari" brand name.
