Unitymedia is the second largest cable communications provider in Germany after Kabel Deutschland. The company offers Triple Play services that combine digital and analogue television, radio, pay TV, telephony services and broadband access.
Unitymedia was formed by the merger of the local cable networks Ish and Iesy, as well as some activities by Telecolumbus West in 2005. After the successful integration of all three operations, activities were re-branded to Unitymedia from May 2007. Investment in network upgrades have continued to this day and most parts are now able to deliver transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps. In November 2009, US-based cable company Liberty Global acquired Unitymedia for EUR 3.5 billion. The acqusition was completed after Liberty Global received approval from the German regulator in January 2010. By the end-2009, Unitymedia’s network covered about 8.8 million homes in Nordrhein-Westfalen und Hessen.
