Network Architecture & Development

Local Connection Verizon’s optical fiber network reaches to user premises and terminates into a custom built router (provided by Verizon) called as CPE (Customer Premises Equipment). Further, CAT5 or higher grade inside wiring is used to connect the router and the computer systems. 
Access Network Verizon’s FTTP network integrates both FTTH & FTTB. 
Service expansion In 3Q05, Verizon expanded its IP services in the markets of San Francisco, CA, and Milwaukee, WI.  
Broadband Investment In July 2004, Verizon announced its plans to invest USD 800 million to expand its fiber-optic-based broadband services to customer premises by the end of 2004

In September 2005, Verizon invested USD 560,000 to USD 1.1 million to upgrade its FTTP network to deliver superior services to the customers in the Bethel Park Area and the Western Pennsylvania towns.
 
Fiber Solutions Center In September 2005, Verizon launched its ‘Fiber Solutions Center (FSC)' to provide support for its high speed internet services over its FTTP network to its customers. 
Network expansion In January 2002, Verizon built a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in a new housing development in Brambleton, Virginia (Loudoun county). Over this fiber network, Verizon provided voice services to residents and transport for video and high-speed data services to Brambleton's video and internet providers. The Brambleton project enabled Verizon to test the current and future needs of customers over FTTH networks. The services were delivered through a passive optical network between homes and businesses. Verizon selected Marconi to provide equipment that was placed in Brambleton homes to convert optical voice, data and video signals to standard electronic signals.  
Network Upgrade In December 2006, Verizon upgraded its DSL network in 1,300 switching centres across 14 states. The following states received the DSL upgrade: California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.

Speed increase In 2Q06, the company upgraded the speeds of its residential plans ‘5 Mbps/2 Mbps’ and ‘15 Mbps/2 Mbps’ by up to 33 percent. It also ceased to offer all its existing business services and launched new plans with speeds of up to 7 Mbps.  
Tariff increase In 2Q05, the operator increased the prices of its residential FTTP services by up to 14.3 percent. The operator expanded its FTTP networks in five more areas including Massapequa, Wantagh, Franklin Square, Port Washington and Oyster Bay 
Sponsorship In April 2006, Verizon partnered with the Merriweather Post Pavilion to sponsor Merriweather Post Pavilion’s Summer 2006 Concert Series. The event will provide an opportunity to the company to showcase its broadband expertise in the area of fibre-optic FiOS TV and FiOS internet service.

In November 2006, the operator donated USD 110,000 to 13 schools in South Jersey to support technology training. Verizon Foundation, a part of Verizon group has donated USD 180,000 to several domestic violence awareness and prevention programmes in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. In October 2006, Verizon Foundation announced its plan to donate USD 52,000 to eleven South Carolina literacy programs which support computer and English literacy.
 
Service launch In July 2004, Verizon launched ‘Verizon FiOS’, high-speed Internet services over its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network. The company initially launched this service for residents of Keller (Texas) and is available in three speed options 5 Mbps (downstream), 15 Mbps and 30 Mbps.

Verizon plans to introduce ‘Verizon One’, a new integrated voice and data service for its broadband customers during the first half of 2005. The new service fully integrates voice and data into a single communication device for the users. The company has signed a multi-year contract to Westell Technologies for supply of equipments for this new service.

Verizon is an ISP in USA. Verizon launched its FiOS video services covering 1 million households in 2005. It started offering the services in Keller, Texas, and soon penetrated the markets in Massachusetts and New York. The company also hired around 3,000 to 5,000 new employees by the end of 2005 to build and run its new FTTP network.

In 1Q06, the operator announced its plan to launch FiOS TV and FiOS Internet services in the Multi Dwelling Units and apartments in the US. Further, in June 2006, the company introduced a new interactive weather and traffic feature in addition to its FiOS TV service.

The use of common technical requirements, based on existing technical standards enabled the equipment manufacturers to cost-effectively develop and build FTTP equipment for BellSouth, SBC Communications, Verizon and other service providers. 
YES Network In June 2006, the company signed an agreement with YES Network to telecast the sports channel for its FiOS TV subscribers in New York. 
Mid-Atlantic Sports Network(MASN In November 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) to telecast Washington Nationals major league Baseball live in 2006 for its FiOS TV subscribers. 
Mid-Atlantic Sports Network In November 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with Mid-Atlantic Sports Network to offer Nationals baseball matches 2006 live for its FiOS TV subscribers.

Alcatel, Motorola, Tellabs In July 2006, Verizon partnered with Alcatel, Motorola and Tellabs to deploy their equipments over its network. This will enable the operator to increase the speeds of its FTTP services and offer enhanced fibre-optic cable services to its users.  
Yahoo Inc. On 23 Aug 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with Yahoo Inc. to offer broadband services to its online DSL subscribers in 28 states and District of Columbia. 
Columbia University On 27 Jul 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with Department of Science, Columbia University to conduct research on VoIP and packet telephony. 
Westell Technologies On 18 Jan 2005, Verizon signed a multi-year agreement with Westell Technologies to manufacture a new device for Verizon’s new integrated voice and data service ‘Verizon One’ for its broadband customers. 
Microsoft On 28 Jan 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with Microsoft for its FiOS TV service. Verizon has selected Microsoft TV as platform for this service. FiOS TV is an advanced digital TV and interactive applications service for its broadband customers and Microsoft TV platform is capable of supporting high-definition television, digital video recording and on-demand programming. The company plans to introduce this new service later this year. 
FTTP equipment vendors In November 2003, Verizon signed agreements with Advanced Fibre Communications, Sumitomo Electric Lightwave, Pirelli Communications Cables and Systems and Fiber Optic Network Solutions to supply fiber-optic and electronic equipment for Verizon’s deployment of high-speed, high-capacity Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) systems in 2004. The FTTP technology enabled Verizon to provide new high-speed and high-capacity data products to its customers. In December 2003, Verizon signed additional agreements with Corning Cable Systems, ADC, Preformed Line Products Co., and Tyco Electronics for its fiber- to-the-premises (FTTP) project. The suppliers provided fiber-optic cabling and other outside plant equipment for Verizon’s network. 
Cable franchise In April 2006, Verizon was awarded the cable franchise to offer its cable services over its FTTP network to the customers in Worcester Township (Montgomery County).

Video franchise In September 2005, Verizon was awarded the video franchise to offer its FiOS TV services over its FTTP network to the customers in Woburn city.

The Apple Valley Town Council In October 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with The Apple Valley Town Council to offer its FiOS TV services over its FTTP network to the customers of Apple Valley. 
Gemstar-TV Guide, HDNet In October 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide and HDNet to offer Gemstar-TV Guide’s TV Guide Channel and TVG Network and HDNet’s programming content over its FTTP network to its FiOS TV subscribers. 
MTV Networks, BET In October 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with MTV Networks and BET to offer MTV Network’s and BET’s programming content over its FTTP network to its FiOS TV subscribers. 
The Weather Channel In September 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with The Weather Channel to telecast The Weather Channel’s ‘The only national weather information network’ and ‘Weather scan’ channels for its FiOS TV subscribers. 
The Herndon Town Council In July 2005, Verizon signed an agreement with The Herndon Town Council to offer FiOS TV services over its FTTP network to the customers in Virginia. 
Yahoo On 17 Jan 2005, Verizon signed a multi-year agreement with Yahoo to deliver ‘Verizon Yahoo!’ a broadband service to Verizon’s DSL and fibre customers. This agreement provided Verizon’s Internet customers a co-branded and fully integrated product offering innovative and interactive services.  
Videocon Group In February 2007, Verizon and Videocon Group formed a joint venture, Verizon Business India, setup in India. The JV applied for a license to provide international long distance services to multinationals with operations in India and also to multinationals in India that wish to establish a global pesence. 
ESPN In February 2007, Verizon and ESPN signed a multi-year agreement under which mobile sports content developed by ESPN will be delivered to Verizon wireless customers.
