Verizon is a leading telecommunications operator in the US offering wireline and wireless services in more than 29 states. It was formed in June 2000, with the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE (a developer of ADSL services). It offers DSL services through two channels, retail and wholesale. Broadband offering also includes fibre based services.

Verizon runs its operations through three business units - Verizon Telecom, which caters to consumers and SMEs; Verizon Business, which offers complete communication solutions including networking, security, mobility, hosting and IT support to large businesses and government; and Domestic Wireless offering wireless services.

On 27 January 2011, Verizon announced plans to acquire Terremark for a consideration of USD 1.4 billion. The acquisition will strengthen the managed IT infrastructure and cloud services portfolio of the operator.
