Vietnam’s government has prioritised the development of the national telecommunications sector to promote economic growth. Now that foreign firms are permitted to hold stakes in Vietnamese telecom companies, the fast growing broadband and mobile markets have attracted foreign investors. The introduction of the 3G mobile broadband and new IP-based services during 2008 and 2009 has given alternative providers new scope and opportunities for growth. However the incumbent, Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), retains its market dominance and is leading in terms of the development and adoption of new technologies.
