Global Broadband Subscribers in Q3 2015

Global broadband subscriber numbers and growth

In Q3 2015, the quarterly growth in fixed broadband subscribers (1.36%) has recovered compared both to Q2 2015 and Q3 2014. In fact, it was the second highest in the last six quarters, with just Q1 2014 being an exception. This quarter the growth was driven mostly by parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Technology trends

For the second quarter in a row fibre continues to dominate as the main broadband access technology, having exceeded the number of end to end copper subscribers globally. Along side this trend, the end to end copper decline is accelerating.

China continues to be the main diver behind the significant FTTH growth, though the Americas also saw FTTH technology share increase in Q3 2015, mainly led by US and Canada.

The US is the second country which passed 100M broadband connections last quarter, and it will be a while before the next contender reaches the same milestone. In the meantime, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and Brazil are in competition for the fifth position in the rating.
