Global and regional tariff benchmarks for residential broadband services

This report compares the cost of residential broadband services across different access technologies and looks at the price and speed variations in different global regions in Q3 2014.

Global residential broadband tariff picture

The average monthly charge for residential broadband services was $80.82 in Q3 2014. The average bandwidth provided by residential services was 62.5Mbps. This means that the average global cost per megabit was $1.29, a price drop of more than 12% compared to the previous quarter.

Fibre is the most advantageously priced broadband technology at US$0.79 per megabit while copper is the most expensive at US9.07 per megabit. All prices have been converted to US$ to allow ease of comparison.

Residential broadband prices and bandwidths by region

The Asia-Pacific region continues to offer the fastest broadband services to residential users. The prices in the region are also among the lowest. The best ‘value for money’, in terms of broadband speeds, is offered to consumers in Japan, Singapore and South Korea.

There has been little shift in the regional trends compared to last quarter, although the average bandwidth reported for residential services has increased in some regions.

The average price for residential broadband services is comparable in Europe and Asia-Pacific, although services in Europe are typically slower.
