Point Topic’s UK Broadband Mapping service gives you a precise and detailed geographical view of broadband availability and take-up in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We can tell you which operators are providing a service in any given area, what the download speeds are, how many people/households/businesses are located in that area and how many of them are subscribing to a broadband service. This information can be produced by any desired geography from government region or local authority level down to postcode level.

What does a licence include?

Depending on which option you choose, you will receive up to four separate databases over the course of your 12 month licence – two databases for broadband take-up and two databases for broadband availability. Databases are produced in CSV format for maximum compatibility with other mapping databases and GIS software. New databases are generated every six months.

UK Broadband Mapping outputs include:

  • Take-up and availability data for each of 1.7m unit postcodes and 220,000 census output areas
  • Full demographics for all areas including population, number or households and businesses
  • Availability by operator (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Sky etc.)
  • Availability by technology (DSL, VDSL, Cable and FTTP)
  • Maximum and average download speeds
  • Take-up by technology with residential/business splits
  • Take-up by operator (BT, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Sky etc.)
  • Forecasted availability of superfast services up to 2017

All Point Topic licences include free telephone and e-mail support during UK office hours for the duration of your licence.

Where does the information come from?

Information is mined from many different sources to produce the UK Broadband Mapping data. We start with a location map of the UK’s 1.7m unit postcodes and combine it with data from the Office of National Statistics, the Valuation Office Agency, Ofcom, telephone exchange location data from BT, Virgin Media footprint estimates, take-up numbers from the broadband operators, speed test data and bespoke research on more than 140 regional NGA projects. All of this information is combined with additional research and data modelling from Point Topic’s analysts who have been mapping UK broadband since 2004.
